Fitting in Cardboard

Design / animation

The brief for this piece was kinetic typograpy set to any piece of audio. I chose a piece by Ze Frank, discussing the struggles of fitting in and finding one’s own identity in one’s youth.

Process

Working with pre-existing audio I wanted to not just illustrate the words, but inject more meaning by combining the narration and the visuals.
The words and their graphic forms needed to combine in a way that introduced new metaphors that would remain unspoken but understood by the audience. I think in some ways it’s more impactful for an audience to reach the meaning of a work for themselves rather than for it to be spelled out.

Though the initial frames had more graphic elements I ultimately decided that they didn’t fit quiet, contemplative tone of the piece and opted for a more toned down visual style.
